Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². This tool uses metric units and shows the standard WHO category.
What are the BMI categories?
Under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight and 30+ obese (WHO). Asian-specific cut-offs are sometimes lower, so interpret with local guidance.
Does BMI work for everyone?
BMI does not account for muscle mass, body composition or ethnicity, so treat it as a screening aid, not a diagnosis.
